Morrisons have freshened up their packaging this year, and these, from the budget end of the price range, are bright and eye-catching in their unwindowed dark fuschia box.
On unwrapping, the production is consistent and uniform. The lattice tops allow a glimpse of the rich filling, and these are topped with a little sprinkling of granulated sugar for a pleasing crunch.
Lattice toppers have somewhat of an advantage, as the smaller amount of pastry gives them a more moist mouth feel. The pastry itself tasted more buttery than I thought it would, and the base is not too thick. These are generous in their filling, with citrus notes. The mincemeat is alcohol-free, but not too syrupy as can be often the case with the better value pies. It was rather lacking in spices, though.
Overall, these were pretty tasty, not too rich, easy to eat. The mince pie equivalent of a 3.8% session bitter – enjoy in multiples.
