So, here we go, first review of the 2021 season…
Morrisons have updated their “The Best” branding over recent months, adopting a serif font, dispensing with the fancy italic writing. The box has a reasonable sized window, allowing an early glimpse of the contents (and a quick comparison with the Serving Suggestion shots on the box).
Once open, the visual impression develops nicely. Each pie is topped with a five-pointed star-within-a-star, allowing a peek of the filling, and across the six pies, the appearance is reasonably consistent. For the depth of pie, the pastry thickness feels spot-on, striking the right balance between richness and resilience.
The filling is generous, and the first taste is of citrus peel. The second bite consolidates this, and then the warmth of the brandy and cider starts to break through.
Overall, a pretty good pie. And a great way to start the festive season!
Priced at £2 for six.
